What happens to your Kindle file
The file is converted to epub first, so the pipeline reads a normal ebook with its chapters, headings, footnotes and images in place. At download you can take the result as AZW3 for your Kindle, or as epub, Word or PDF.
Books bought in the Kindle store are usually locked with DRM. We do not remove it, because that is illegal in most countries. A locked file is refused at upload, with a page that says so. Nothing is charged.
Files you sent to your own Kindle, older MOBI files, and DRM-free copies from publishers all convert without trouble.
