Spanish original

Our English translation

En un lugar de la Mancha, de cuyo nombre no quiero acordarme, no ha mucho tiempo que vivía un hidalgo de los de lanza en astillero, adarga antigua, rocín flaco y galgo corredor. Una olla de algo más vaca que carnero, salpicón las más noches, duelos y quebrantos los sábados, lantejas los viernes, algún palomino de añadidura los domingos, consumían las tres partes de su hacienda.

In a place in La Mancha, whose name I have no wish to recall, there lived not long ago a hidalgo of the sort who keep a lance in its rack, an old leather shield, a lean nag and a swift greyhound. A stew made of rather more beef than mutton, salpicón most nights, "eggs and bacon" on Saturdays, lentils on Fridays, and a young pigeon by way of extra on Sundays, consumed three-quarters of his estate.

What a faithful English edition must get right

Spanish raya dialogue becomes English quotation marks, with the same single or double style used through the whole book.

Words tied to the culture — an hidalgo, a tortilla, a plaza — each get one decision: translate it, keep it, or keep it with a short explanation. The decision is written in the brief, so chapter twenty agrees with chapter one.

Spanish sentences can run much longer than English ones. We keep the author's rhythm instead of cutting their prose into short pieces they never wrote.

Before translation starts, we build a translator's brief from your whole book: names, terms, tone, typography. You read it and can change it. The brief then guides every chapter. Each passage is read again, independently, against your original, and translated again where that check finds a problem. The finished book gets one whole-book read for continuity. Every change goes into your quality report.
