Our Russian translation
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife.
Все признают ту истину, что холостяк, располагающий приличным состоянием, должен непременно нуждаться в жене.
However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood, this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
Как бы мало ни были известны чувства или намерения такого человека при его появлении в новой округе, эта истина настолько прочно укоренилась в умах соседских семейств, что его тут же начинают считать законной собственностью той или другой из их дочерей.
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?”
«Дорогой мистер Беннет, — сказала ему как-то раз его супруга, — слышали ли вы, что Незерфилд-парк наконец-то сдан?»
Mr. Bennet replied that he had not.
Мистер Беннет ответил, что не слышал.
What a faithful Russian edition must get right
Russian marks dialogue with dashes, not quotation marks, and uses «guillemets» (with „lapki“ inside them) for quotations. A faithful Russian edition changes the punctuation system too, not only the words.
Every name that repeats needs one spelling for the whole book. A Mr. Bennet who is Беннет in chapter one must not become Бэннет or Бенет by chapter twenty.
English “you” becomes either ты or вы. Who speaks formally to whom is decided once for each pair of characters and stays the same through the book — unless the relationship itself changes, and then it changes on purpose.
Before translation starts, we build a translator's brief from your whole book: names, terms, tone, typography. You read it and can change it. The brief then guides every chapter. Each passage is read again, independently, against your original, and translated again where that check finds a problem. The finished book gets one whole-book read for continuity. Every change goes into your quality report.
