Our German translation
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way.
What a faithful German edition must get right
German writes every noun with a capital letter and uses „so“ or »so« for quotations. One style is chosen and kept for the whole book.
English “you” becomes Sie or du. Who speaks formally to whom is decided once for each pair of characters and stays the same through the chapters.
Terms that repeat often become one long word in German (the whale-ship, das Walfangschiff). Each one is formed once and then reused, not invented again in every chapter.
Before translation starts, we build a translator's brief from your whole book: names, terms, tone, typography. You read it and can change it. The brief then guides every chapter. Each passage is read again, independently, against your original, and translated again where that check finds a problem. The finished book gets one whole-book read for continuity. Every change goes into your quality report.
