German original

Our English translation

When Gregor Samsa woke one morning from troubled dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a monstrous vermin. He lay on his armour-like hard back and saw, as he lifted his head a little, his brown, arched belly, divided by stiffened sections, on top of which the bedcover, about to slide off completely, could barely maintain itself. His many legs, pitifully thin compared to the rest of his bulk, flickered helplessly before his eyes.

What a faithful English edition must get right

German long words become English phrases, and each one that repeats must become the same phrase every time. That is what a book-wide glossary is for.

German quotation marks („so“ or »so«) become English quotation marks, in one style used everywhere.

Long German sentences stay long in English. Faithful means keeping the author's sentence structure, not making it simpler.

Before translation starts, we build a translator's brief from your whole book: names, terms, tone, typography. You read it and can change it. The brief then guides every chapter. Each passage is read again, independently, against your original, and translated again where that check finds a problem. The finished book gets one whole-book read for continuity. Every change goes into your quality report.
