On 24 February 1815, the lookout of Notre-Dame de la Garde signalled the three-master the Pharaon, coming from Smyrna, Trieste and Naples.
Comme d'habitude, un pilote côtier partit aussitôt du port, rasa le château d'If, et alla aborder le navire entre le cap de Morgion et l'île de Rion.
As usual, a coastal pilot set out at once from the port, hugged the Château d'If, and went to come alongside the ship between Cap de Morgion and the Île de Rion.
What a faithful English edition must get right
French « guillemets » and dialogue dashes become English quotation marks, in one style used everywhere.
Names, titles and forms of address (monsieur, le comte, abbé) each get one rule: translate it, keep it, or keep it with a short explanation. The rule holds from the first chapter to the last.
French takes more words than English to say the same thing. We keep the author's pace instead of compressing the book into a different one.
Before translation starts, we build a translator's brief from your whole book: names, terms, tone, typography. You read it and can change it. The brief then guides every chapter. Each passage is read again, independently, against your original, and translated again where that check finds a problem. The finished book gets one whole-book read for continuity. Every change goes into your quality report.
