Supposto o uso vulgar seja começar pelo nascimento, duas considerações me levaram a adoptar differente methodo: a primeira é que eu não sou propriamente um autor defunto, mas um defunto autor, para quem a campa foi outro berço; a segunda é que o escripto ficaria assim mais galante e mais novo.
For some time I hesitated whether I should open these memoirs at the beginning or at the end, that is to say, whether I should place my birth first or my death. Though the common usage is to begin with birth, two considerations led me to adopt a different method: the first is that I am not, strictly speaking, an author deceased, but a deceased author, for whom the grave was another cradle; the second is that the writing would thus be more rakish and more novel.
